YASKAWA Electric Corporation (Head Office: Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan; Representative Director, President: Masahiro Ogawa) has been enhancing product development aimed at achieving “i³-Mechatronics” solution concept. Announced in 2017, the concept adds digital data management to traditional automation solutions in order to realize new industrial automation revolutions as described in the company’s long-term business plan, “Vision 2025.” As the new series of “iCube Control” realizing i³-Mechatronics Solution Concept, Yaskawa is rolling out iC9000 series machine controllers, which comply with international standard IEC 61131-3 for PLC languages and adopt EtherCAT, a motion network widely used worldwide. Yaskawa started selling two models of iC9200 machine controllers, the iC9226M-EC and the iC9226M-FSoE (functional safety compliant).

Yaskawa commercialized its MPX1000 Series in January 2024 as part of the iCube Control controller solution to realize i³-Mechatronics. These high-speed, high-precision, multi-axis machine controllers have been highly acclaimed. The new iC9000 Series will form a key pillar of the iCube Control solution. The aim is to make programming easier with a technology base that complies with global standards and provide versatile support for a wide range of equipment and applications. The iC9000 Series combines Yaskawa’s high-level motion control technology and functional application development environments with functional safety support. This means that series products can be used all around the world and help further raise the added value of customers’ equipment.
(1) Support for international standard IEC 61131-3 for PLC languages
Supports application program development languages covered by the IEC 61131-3 standard: ladder diagram (LD), function block diagram (FBD), structure text (ST), and sequential function chart (SFC). Motion control application programs can be created using the PLCopen Motion Control FB library.
(2) Uses EtherCAT motion networks
Uses EtherCAT for motion networks that can connect a wide range of servo, inverter, and I/O devices with a minimum 500 μs communications cycle. Combined with Yaskawa’s Σ-X Series of AC servo drives, enables motion control applications that can fully leverage servo performance.
(3) Functional safety compliant
In addition to built-in safety PLC functionality, the iC9226M-FSoE supports Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) that enables the use of functional safety devices. A safety programming environment compatible with SIL3* is included, and the logic and motion of safety and non-safety components can be programmed with a single engineering tool (iCube Engineer), making it easy to build a functional safety system. Yaskawa’s Σ-X Series Advanced Safety Module ASM-X, which supports a diverse range of safety functions, or SLIO I/O Series Safety I/O, can be used when building systems.
*Stands for Safety Integrity Level. SIL3 is the highest safety level in industrial equipment applications.
(4) Support for SLIO I/O Series
As with other Yaskawa series such as YRM1030 and MPX1000, the many different kinds of SLIO I/O devices can be connected directly to iC9200 units, making it easy to build a wide range of systems.
(5) Support for multiple communications protocols
In addition to EtherCAT, iC9200 units have 2 Ethernet ports, enabling the use of industrial Ethernet protocols such as PROFINET I-Device and EtherNet/IP. This allows flexible connectivity with higher-level systems and other companies’ equipment.
(6) Provided with iCube Engineer engineering environment
Supports parameter configuration, diagnostics, and program editing via an intuitive GUI.
